It might be January, but today I’m jumping ahead to St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day is all about green, so of course I love it! Plus I’m Irish.
Today’s post is part of the ongoing Create & Share Challenge organized by Steph of Casa Watkins. GraphicStock is this month’s sponsor. I hadn’t used this service before, but this project was fun. They have images for seriously anything you could ever want.
Each blogger came up with a fun way to use an image from the site. Scroll down to see all of the projects!
I wanted to do something with a St. Patrick’s Day graphic, and I also had some old spaghetti sauce jars sitting around that I knew I could use for a future craft. (I might have a craft hoarding problem.) So I combined the two and came up with my craft.
This project was fun to make – and once I figured out how to get the shamrock shape onto the jar – was relatively easy.

Supply list:
- Spaghetti sauce jars/Mason jars
- Ruler
- Microsoft Word
- Printer
- Paper
- Scissors
- Painter’s tape
- White paint (Rust-Oleum spray paint or DecoArt paint – I used both, one on each jar)
- Paint roller
- Green and white twine
- Green and white straws
How to turn old jars into St. Patrick’s Day decor:
1. Clean your jars.
If you’re using Mason jars, no prep work here. If you’re using old spaghetti sauce jars like me, wash them out and let them dry. I used Classico jars – I love the shape of them.
2. Measure a side of the jar so you know how big the image can be.
I knew I had a space about 3” tall by 1 ½” wide.
3. Find your image on GraphicStock.
4. Download the image to your computer.
5. Open Microsoft Word and insert the image into your document.
(Go to Insert > Photo > Picture from File…)
6. Resize the image to fit in the dimensions you measured in step 2.
7. Print the document.
8. Cut the image out.
9. Place the image on top of a few pieces of painter’s tape.
10. Trace the shamrock image onto the tape.
11. Cut out the shape so you have a shamrock made of painter’s tape.
Place it on the Mason jar.
I also put painter’s tape inside the jar to keep any paint from getting inside.
12. Paint jar white. I painted the two jars in two different ways.
I painted the first jar with this paint and a roller. It has a bit more of a chalky look.
I spray painted the second one, which gives it a more glossy look.
Just note if the tape isn’t pushed down tightly on the jar, the spray paint can get underneath and mess up your shape. (I had a little bit of paint that got underneath, but I was able to scrape it off.)
Personal preference. I like both of them, and it’s fun to have variety sometimes. I wanted to try both out to see how I liked each.
13. Let paint dry.
14. Take the painter’s tape off.
15. Wrap the twine around the top of the jar.
I wrapped it about 20 times around the top of each jar.
16. Display.
You can use these for fun straws or silverware if you plan to have a St. Patrick’s Day party.
