I know, I know. I’m sure some of you are cringing. Christmas already?!
I didn’t mean to talk about Christmas this early. When Steph and Cat, hosts of the monthly Create & Share Challenge, told us bloggers that the September challenge was to create a DIY project with rope, I started thinking about what to do.
I was at Michael’s last week scoping out the fall sale stuff (yes, there’s already sales on fall decor – run there now!) In the clearance aisle, I saw this little wood distressed sign. I immediately loved it and started thinking about how I could use it for this rope challenge.
I figured I could spell something with rope on it, but it would have to be a short word, like ‘joy’. I wasn’t sure ‘fall’ would fit without looking crowded.
I had these jingle bells in my craft supply that I hadn’t done anything with yet, so my idea was coming together. Here it is!
This was easy to make! So you can wait until closer to Christmas if you don’t want to make anything Christmas-y yet. 🙂
A group of talented bloggers are sharing their rope DIY projects today, too, so be sure to hop over to their blog posts, all linked at the bottom of this post.

Supply list:
- Wood sign
- Rope
- Twine
- Scissors
- Jingle bells
- Rubber cement
How to make a Christmas ‘JOY’ sign with rope:
1. Measure out your letters.
Before you just start cutting the rope, I laid out the letters on the wood to make sure the “J-O-Y” would fit and look good on the sign before I cut the rope.
Then cut each the rope length needed for each letter.
2. Glue the rope letters to the wood sign.
You could use a hot glue gun or rubber cement for this step.
I had rubber cement out already so I went with that. Just be sure to hold the rope down for a few seconds after you apply the rubber cement.
3. Add the jingle bells.
The wood I bought had a piece of twine on the back as the way to hang up the wood sign. I used twine to attach the bells to that piece of twine.
Thread the bells through a piece of thin twine, and tie the twine onto the existing twine on the wood.
4. Hang it up!
Enjoy your new DIY sign.
