Hey, Meg.
I am obsessed with black furniture!!! Waaay back in1987, I was at a very cool store in Marshalltown Iowa and in the backroom, I saw this blanket chest. The room was kind of dark, so I couldn’t tell if the color of the chest was dark blue or dark green, but it was $120 and I asked my husband if I could get it b/c it was the only one they had there. He said I could get it- YAY!!! I was in a blue decorating phase at the time, and I thought it would be a great coffee table. I bought it and when we took it out into the sunlight outside of the store, I saw that it was actually painted black. It was a little distressed, with paint sanded off of the corners and I was in love!!! I put it in my living room, and one of the first people to see it, was a friend, who asked me excitedly, “Are you going to refinish it?” I said, “No!!! I LOVE how it looks!!!” Thank blanket chest started my infatuation with black furniture, and I bought an unfinished small cupboard that I painted black and use that in my dining room. I have a friend whose husband makes furniture and I commissioned a dry sink from him and had it painted-you guessed it- black. For our 25th anniversary, my (married by then) daughter came over to our house and said “We’re going shopping for a china hutch for you.” And I picked out a gorgeous black one. We paid for it, but she was the impetus for the purchase (thank you, Tristan!!!). I have a black dresser in one of our spare bedrooms and same daughter said to me, “Quit buying black furniture.” Only now,15 years later, she is buying black furniture also. We replaced our old house cupboards in 1993 with oak veneered ones, which i liked, but I told my husband, “When I’m ready for a change, I’m painting them black.” 4 years ago, at his prodding, we did just that, and they look stunning. We also have a black entertainment center. I think black painted furniture is classy and timeless. I very much enjoyed this article, as I do ALL of your posts. thanks for all the inspo!!!

Thank you for reading! Black furniture is such a great, neutral option. Black cabinets sound great. Love that your daughter is copying in your footsteps!
