A great list of easy DIY wall decor and DIY wall art ideas whether you’re looking for metal, wood, cork, rustic or painted pieces for your blank walls!
As we start decorating our walls in various rooms, I realized just how much DIY wall decor we’ve put together over the years.
Houses can have a lot of walls to fill, and while I love shopping for artwork, there’s something fun (and budget-friendly) about a DIY project, too.
So I figured I’d round up our favorite DIY wall decor projects in case you’re looking for some ideas for the blank walls in your house, too.
And if you’re more in the shopping mood, I’ll link to a few blog posts on my favorite artwork to buy at the end of this post.
16 easy DIY wall decor and DIY wall art ideas:
1. DIY burned wood picture frames
These were a fun DIY with some wood pieces and our heat gun.
See the tutorial for DIY picture frames with a burned wood finish.
2. Hang rustic crates as wall shelves
This was one of my favorite little corners in the rental house. I just love these crates on the wall and am excited to use them again as we plan our family room!

3. Old windows turned picture frames
These windows were originally the doors from a built-in cabinet on the wall we knocked down between our original dining room and kitchen. I’m so glad we could reuse them.
See the tutorial for repurposing old windows into picture frames.
After a few years, I painted the windows again (with a dry brush technique) for an updated look. Gotta love paint – it’s so easy to update anything!
See the tutorial for how to dry brush.
4. A DIY rustic wood sign
This was a plain wood tray, and since we have about a million trays around here, I figured it’d be fun to turn it into a DIY wall art piece instead.

5. Wood and rope sign
This is such a cute one, I didn’t want to skip it just because it’s Christmas-themed! You could easily put one of these together for any time of year though (minus the jingle bells!).
See the tutorial for this DIY rope sign.
6. Spring printable

This was another dark metal piece we’d had for a while. I just can’t handle all the dark pieces anymore! (I’m sure at some point in the future, I’ll be painting everything black again!)

12. Paint and distress an old shutter
We found this shutter for $5 at a local decor store (it was dirty and a weird shade of green). I knew I had to do something with it!

13. Paint and glaze an old tile
This was originally a multi-colored tile that almost got tossed (think brown, red and green!), but then I thought the texture on it could be fun for a glazing project … and it was!
